There were 73 Cyclospora cases reported in 2024 (1.3 per 100,000 population). This is markedly higher than the average annual number of cases reported from 2014 to 2023 (median, 54; range, 1 to 156 per year). In 2024, 51% of cases occurred in people who resided in the metropolitan area.
The median age of cases was 48 years (range, 11 months to 79 years). Sixty-two percent were female. Sixty (82%) were white, 6 (8%) reported other races, 5 (7%) were Black, and two (3%) were Asian. Of the 72 cases for which ethnicity was reported, 11 (15%) were Hispanic. Three percent were hospitalized; the median length of hospitalization was 17 days (range, 5 to 29 days). Forty-five percent of infections occurred during May through July. Forty-five percent of cases reported travel outside the United States during the two weeks prior to illness onset. This is an increase from 2014 to 2023 (median, 27%; range 0% to 100%). In 2024, 79% of cases that traveled internationally reported travel to Mexico.
