- A record high of 73 confirmed and probable cases were reported in 2023, surpassing the 72 cases reported in 2011

In 2023, there were 73 confirmed and probable cases reported (1.3 cases per 100,000), representing the highest number of annual cases reported to date in Minnesota, and an increase from the 61 cases in 2022. Over the past decade, slight annual fluctuations in reported cases have been observed, however, the number of reported cases continues to trend upward. Case demographics have not changed much over time. In 2023, 43 (59%) of the cases occurred in males, and the median case age was 66 years (range, 0 to 95), up slightly from 65 in 2022. This is equal to the median age for anaplasmosis (66 years), but older than the median age for Lyme disease (51 years). Illness onset dates peaked in the summer months: 47 (77%) of the 61 cases with known onset date reported first experiencing symptoms in June, July, or August. Twenty-eight (38%) of the 73 cases were hospitalized due to their infection, with a median admission duration of five days (range, 2 to 25). Fifteen patients reported severe complications (e.g., organ failure), and one patient died as a result of their babesiosis infection.
