Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Interim Guidance on Doxy PEP
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released draft considerations for doxy PEP as a strategy to prevent bacterial STIs. During this period, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has issued Interim Recommendations for the Use of Doxycycline for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (doxy PEP) for the Prevention of Certain Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) (PDF).

Syphilis Is On the Rise
The CDC: STD Data and Statistics highlights the urgency of continuously increasing reported cases of syphilis nationwide, and in Minnesota (Syphilis Outbreak Response and Case Counts). Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that if left untreated, can be harmful and cause serious long-term health consequences. All communities in Minnesota should be vigilant, recognize the presence of syphilis, and take steps to get the word out about screening and prevention. Learn more at Syphilis.

New 2021 STI Treatment Guidelines
The CDC's 2021 STI Treatment Guidelines have been updated. For an overview of important changes, review the 2021 STI Treatment Guideline Highlights (PDF).

More Information about STDs

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These are infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites that are spread through sexual activity, specifically anal, vaginal, and oral sex. Some STDs, such as hepatitis B and HIV, are also transmitted through blood-to-blood contact, through sharing syringes or equipment to inject drugs, body piercing equipment or tattooing needles. Pregnant people with STDs may pass their infections to infants during pregnancy, birth, or through breast feeding.
