Resources in this section include educational information to guide school leaders and to train school staff in undesignated stock epinephrine delivery system administration.
Staff Training to Administer Undesignated Stock Epinephrine Delivery System(s)
Training to administer an epinephrine delivery system in an emergency response to probable life-threatening allergic reaction is essential. This training, since it is not student specific (i.e., a student with an individual prescription for an epinephrine delivery system (e.g., EPI PEN, Auvi-Q, neffy) for an anaphylactic reaction) is not nursing delegation. This training is more closely aligned with CPR and First Aid.
It is recommended that training topics include:
- Understanding the school’s procedure for emergency response.
- How to identify a possible anaphylactic reaction and how to respond.
- Understand what epinephrine is, how it works, where to locate the medication, and how to give it to someone who is suspected to having an anaphylactic reaction.
- Understand how to care for the person after administering an epinephrine delivery system until EMS arrives.
The level of training needed to build confidence and competency may vary depending upon the individual person, their role in the school, and previous training or experience.
Training Options
MDH School Health Team has gathered and reviewed several types of training materials and videos available through several state and national organizations. This list does not reflect endorsement of any specific training materials. Schools will need to review and determine the training based on their policy, procedures, environment, and staff who are being trained.
In-Person Training Provided by the School Nurse
Rather than opting for online or virtual training, a district may opt to utilize the Licensed School Nurse to provide staffing training specific to the district’s anaphylaxis emergency response procedures and undesignated epinephrine delivery devices that the school chooses to stock and maintain.
It may be beneficial to utilize time during an all staff meeting during workshop week to provide this training and/or schedule a small group training session for any staff who might be called to respond to a medical emergency and responsible for administering an undesignated stock epinephrine delivery system.
