Varicella (Chickenpox) and Zoster (Shingles) Statistics
Updated 08/13/2026
The incidence of varicella (chickenpox) declined sharply in Minnesota over the past 20 years because of the varicella vaccine. In recent years, as vaccination rates have declined, we have seen an increase in varicella incidence, and an increase in varicella outbreaks.
Healthcare providers, childcares, and schools are required to report all suspected and confirmed cases of varicella.
