Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome is a rare, life-threatening complication of certain types of bacterial infections. Often toxic shock syndrome results from toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, but the condition may also be caused by toxins produced by group A streptococcus bacteria.

Although toxic shock syndrome has been linked to superabsorbent tampon use in menstruating women, this condition can affect men, children, and people of all ages.

  Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome with isolate submission (if isolated) is reportable to MDH within one working day.
