2019 — Announced new state suicide prevention grant opportunity for $248,000 in suicide prevention community-based grants.

In June, 2019 launched the Suicide in Minnesota-Reports Suicide in Minnesota, 1999-2017 - Minnesota Department of Health  

In May, 2019 the Minnesota Legislature appropriated an additional $595,000 for the first biennium (2020 – 2021) and $1,000,000 for the second biennium (2022 – 2023) for community-based suicide prevention grants.

The Minnesota Legislature appropriate for 2020 – 2021 an additional $1.2 million for creating a National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network; $588,000 for Kognito, a web-based suicide prevention training for school personnel; and $95,000 for the expansion of the Zero Suicide Model. There is an increase of dollars in each of these activities for the second biennium of 2022- 2023.

2018 — Engaged over 50 professionals from a variety of sectors and disciplines across Minnesota to prioritize the goals, objectives and tasks of the State Plan for through 2023.

2017 — Revitalized the Minnesota Suicide Prevention Task Force to advise and provide strategic direction on the implementation of the Minnesota State Suicide Prevention Plan.

2016 — Legislative Report: Suicide-Related Data Plan: Improving the timeliness, usefulness and quality of data (PDF) and the 2016 Suicide Program Fact Sheet were released. Through a competitive process, seven community grants were awarded for two- and four-year funding periods.

2015 — Minnesota State Suicide Prevention Plan: Goals and Objectives for Action 2015-2020 (PDF) was released. Suicide prevention program funds increased to $755,000 for the FY2016 and FY2017. Three grant RFPs were released.

2014 — The 2014 Suicide Program Fact Sheet was released. The Minnesota State Suicide Prevention Task Force met and prioritized suicide prevention recommendations for Minnesota.

2013 — Formed the State Suicide Prevention Planning Taskforce, and extended three currently funded community grants for another two years (ended June of 2015).

2012 — Suicide Program Fact Sheet released, and extended the three community grants funding for another 18 months (ending June of 2013).

2011 — Suicide Program Fact Sheet released.

2010 — Suicide prevention program funds reduced to $292,000 for the FY2010 and FY2011, request for proposals released, and through a competitive process three community grants were awarded for 18-month funding period.

2009 — Suicide Program Fact Sheet released.

2008 — Through a competitive process, five community grants were awarded for a two-year funding period.

2007 — State restored funding for 2008-2009 biennium, released the request for proposals, and revised suicide prevention plan.

2006 — No state funding available.

2005 — Report provided to the 2005 Minnesota Legislature, and state funding was eliminated.

2004 — Through a competitive process, 13 community grants were awarded for a three-year funding period.

2003 — Report provided to 2003 Minnesota Legislature, and release of request for proposals.

2002 — Through a competitive process, one evaluation capacity-building grant and 13 community grants, MDH awarded for a two-year funding period.

2001 — The Minnesota Legislature provided MDH with $1.1 million annually to implement the state plan and release of request for proposals.

2000 — At the request of the Minnesota Legislature (Ch. 245, Art. 1, Sec. 3) MDH issued a report on suicide in Minnesota and led the development of a state suicide prevention plan.
