Environmental Public Health

Definitions of Foundational Public Health Responsibilities 

Environmental public health involves monitoring, preventing, and addressing environmental health hazards by collecting and sharing data; educating and collaborating with communities and partners; enforcing regulations; developing prevention plans; promoting safe and resilient environments; and coordinating funding and resources to protect public health.

A1. Collect, analyze, and interpret data and information related to environmental health.

A2. Validate information, data, analysis, and findings.

A3. Assure education and technical assistance are provided for prevention, abatement, and compliance, or refer as appropriate.

B1. Build and maintain relationships with appropriate audiences.

B2. Engage with the community to assess the need for prevention or abatement activities.

B3. Collaborate with and educate partners and communities.

B4. Convene cross-sector, cross-agency, and public health partners to identify strategies or initiatives.

B5. Develop, implement, and maintain a written plan.

B6. Engage with partners and communities to collect feedback.

B7. Participate in opportunities to address sustainability, land use planning, and climate efforts promoting positive public health outcomes and resilient communities.

C1. Develop and maintain written training materials, provide training to appropriate staff.

C2. Investigate and document environmental health complaints.

C3. Conduct timely investigations in response to environmental health risks.

C4. License, certify, or permit regulated parties or entities within the jurisdiction.

C5. Inspect regulated parties or entities within the jurisdiction.

C6. Issue, enforce, and document corrective actions with respect to environmental health violations.

C7. Perform and document follow-up activities for remediation.

C8. Assure water and solid waste systems are managed safely.

C9. Assure availability of environmental, biological, and chemical laboratory testing.

D1. Partner across agencies to assure protection of workers and the public from hazards related to environmental factors.

D2. Establish a system for tracking efforts toward agreed upon responsibilities, and track these efforts.

D3. Implement prioritized strategies or initiatives and assess how external factors and conditions affect implementation.

D4. Identify and respond to emerging issues.

E1. Assure and maintain baseline funding to support mandated environmental public health programs and activities.

E2. Seek out, apply for, and manage funding opportunities.

E3. Coordinate environmental public health programs and activities with governmental agencies.

E4. Assure training about environmental public health roles and responsibilities for agency staff.
