Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant

The CDC Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant allows states, territories, and tribes to address their own unique public health needs and challenges with innovative and community driven methods.

All recipients aim to keep the Block Grant funding flexible to:

  • Address emerging health issues and gaps
  • Decrease premature death and disabilities by focusing on the leading preventable risk factors
  • Work to achieve health equity and eliminate health disparities by addressing the social determinants of health
  • Support local programs to achieve healthy communities
  • Monitor health status of the programs supported by block grant

As a critical public health resource, the Preventive Block Grant supports the following activities in Minnesota:

  • Investigation and control of infectious diseases
  • Support for local health departments
  • Surveillance of chronic diseases and environmental health threats
  • Sexually transmitted disease investigation
  • Obesity prevention activities
  • Prevention of alcohol and prescription drug abuse, and illicit drug use
  • Mental health promotion/suicide prevention

Minnesota’s Preventive Block Grant is used to carry out important public health responsibilities; address emerging public health issues; provide start-up money for programs that are eventually supported by other sources; and augment programs where other resources are unavailable or inadequate.
