Betty Hubbard Maternal and Child Health Leadership Award

Elizabeth (Betty) Hubbard, a longtime advocate for the health needs of mothers and children and an original member of the Maternal and Child Health Advisory Committee, died in 1989. In 1990, the committee and the Minnesota Department of Health honored her work and her memory by establishing the Annual Betty Hubbard MCH Leadership Award. This award of recognition is presented to individuals or organizations in Minnesota making significant contributions to maternal and child health.

The Maternal and Child Health Advisory Committee and the Commissioner of Health honor her work and her memory by presenting the award each year.

About the award

The award is bestowed to individuals, teams, or organizations making significant contributions to improve health outcomes for Minnesota women, children, and families in the two categories listed below:

Statewide level: recognizing a nominee’s contributions to maternal and child health with outcomes at a statewide level.

Community level: recognizing contributions to maternal and child health with outcomes that impact an entire community or a targeted population within a community.

Criteria for both award categories:

  • Nominee's qualifications as a recognized expert or authority, and/or long-term involvement, in their area of maternal, child and family health.
  • Outcomes that demonstrate the nominee's contributions in any or all of the following areas:
    • Advancing or improving the health status of mothers, children, or families in Minnesota on a community or statewide basis.
    • Developing successful, innovative program(s) in maternal, child and family health in Minnesota.
    • Advocating for maternal and child health with decision-making bodies (i.e. legislative bodies, corporations, school boards).
    • Collaborating with health, education, social services, and other decision makers and service providers.
