Allina Mercy Hospital Public Hearing

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) held a public hearing on March 26 at 6 p.m. on the relocation of Mercy Hospital Unity Campus (Fridley) intensive care services to the Mercy Campus (Coon Rapids), the relocation of Unity Campus surgical services to the Mercy Campus and the closure of the inpatient pediatric unit at Mercy Campus. All other Mercy pediatric services will remain in place.

More information is available in the MDH news release: Public hearing set for March 26 on Allina Mercy Hospital's relocation of two Unity Campus services and closure of Mercy Campus inpatient pediatric unit.

On March 26, 2024, at 6:00pm, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) hosted a public hearing for Allina Mercy Hospital to explain changes in services. The public hearing was held virtually and was well-attended with over 200 people. A question-and-answer period was held following the hospital’s presentation of changes. There were a number of comments and questions asked with the hospital having a chance to answer each of them. In addition, there were questions and comments submitted in advance which were read aloud by MDH staff. At the end of the hearing, there were still a handful of people who had their hands raised to speak. MDH regrets these individuals were not called upon prior to the hearing ending.

Following the public hearing, MDH staff met to review procedures to ensure all public voices can be heard. To make sure anyone who did not get a chance to make their comments or ask questions has the opportunity to do so, MDH is opening up additional time for the pubic to submit comments and/or questions. We will close this expanded comment period on April 29, 2024. MDH will forward these to hospital leadership along with the transcript from the hearing.

The Minnesota Department of Health serves as a facilitator to ensure there is public discussion and engagement for any proposed closure, reduction of services or relocation of services for a hospital or hospital campus as outlined in Minnesota Statutes, section 144.555.

This statute gives MDH the authority to hold the meeting and to inform the public but not to change, delay or prevent the proposed changes, closures or relocations.
