Stakeholder Input Process Report

Engagement Initiative with Minnesota's Tribal Nations

In early 2013, the Office of Statewide Health Improvement Initiatives committed to a year-long community engagement process with Minnesota's tribal nations to gather information and rebuild the Tribal SHIP and the Tribal Tobacco Grant Program.

Representatives from the tribes and MDH selected a culturally competent contractor to plan, convene and facilitate a culturally appropriate stakeholder input process with the state’s American Indian communities. Tribal members/grantees served on a steering committee for this process, which included selection of the contractor, providing input and feedback throughout the process, and serving as liaisons between their communities and the engagement process.

Project goals

  • Determine culturally based, promising practices to address obesity, commercial tobacco use/exposure and other chronic diseases
  • Assist MDH in improving its grant making model for American Indian communities

Recommendations

The stakeholder input process resulted in a set of key recommendations, covering these broad areas:

  • American Indian community and MDH relationships
  • Grant making
  • Work plan development
  • Strategies and activities
  • Grant management
